50 Years of Integration

50 Years of IntegrationOn March 8, 1957 the Florida Supreme Courts ruled that Virgil Hawkins could not enter UF immediately. Many were outraged by the ruling but Hawkins publicly announced he had not given up. Hawkins’ appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was remanded to the Federal District Court and heard by Judge Dozier DeVane on June 18, 1958.

The state argued that Virgil Hawkins was not qualified to enter the University of Florida College of Law, based on a LSAT score of 200, the lowest possible score. Judge DeVane ruled Hawkins was not qualified for admission but ruled the case was a class action suit, and the state’s universities could no longer deny qualified Blacks entrance on the basis of race. That June, Judge DeVane ended Hawkins’ nine-year attempt for admission to UF but also ended segregation at UF.

One on One With Danni BayShe compares her music to the smell of a new book, the gratification of peeing when you've been holding it for too long, the dizziness you feel after a first kiss, and oddly enough, hot macaroni & cheese made from scratch.

While the above metaphors may not exactly fit our bill of words, it's safe to say that Danni Bay is a fresh of breath air in today's music scene.  Myya Passmore sits down with the University of Florida Junior to discuss the meaning of music and what the future may hold for this young starlette.
