Grimace all you want, but a lot can be said about Britney Spears’ music- and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Blackout beyond anything else is listenable, and while the pop audience was definitely the intended target here, casual listeners may find some enjoyment too.
The first single, “Gimme More”, prefaces the album almost perfectly – most songs are in some way sexually motivated (Candy Waterfalls, Get Naked). If there were any doubt as to whether Spears had fully taken on this dominatrix persona – Blackout seals the deal. The beats are lusciously overdone – 7 of the 12 are from the likes of Timbaland, Pharrell & T-Pain. Spears even becomes somewhat introspective, effectively summing up her troubled marriage on the track “Why Should I be Sad”. It’s ironic that the reception to this album may be blacked out due to Spears’ personal life, but those willing to look passed it all will notice significant growth in her music.
